A Visit to Duisburg Germany
August 19, 2009Duisburg is a city located in western Germany, in the Ruhr area. Having the biggest inland port in Europe and being close to Dusseldorf International Airport, Duisburg became an important commercial center of steel manufacturing.
The city today is the result of incorporating several small villages and towns, being Germany’s 12th city as size. The central part of the city is connected to the north one by Innenhafen, an area where old industrial buildings and warehouses were converted into offices and cultural institutions. A former mill and warehouse were converted into the Museum Kultur und Stadthistorisches, with exhibitions of archeology and history, together with an exhibition of works done by the cartographer and geographer Gerardus Mercator. His most prominent work, the Mercator projection, is still used today in a modified form. This allows the maps to be designed accurately, on a flat surface.
On the eastern coast you will find another area of renovated stores, among them being the Kuppersmuhle Museum, the new contemporary art forum. Beside it you can find the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum, with an important collection of twentieth century art.
